2013 Study of SMSFs

UNLOCKING OPPORTUNITIES
IN THE WORLD OF SMSF

Russell Investments and the SMSF Professionals Association of Australia Limited (SPAA) today launched the third annual SMSF report.

The report highlights how specialist advice is critical to helping SMSFs expand their investment horizons and increase portfolio diversification.

Intimate with Self Managed Superannuation, the benchmark study into the burgeoning SMSF sector was commissioned by Russell and SPAA and conducted by independent research group CoreData. It surveyed SMSF trustees, non-trustees and professional SMSF advisers during September and October 2012.

Key findings
  • Portfolio diversity is still hindered by a wall of cash and reliance on familiar and direct investments like shares, term deposits and property. Cash and term deposits accounted for 33.9% of SMSF investments in 2012.
  • Trustees are driving investment decisions with 58.8% that claim to have strong or very strong knowledge of investments, and 61.6% using their own research.
  • More and more trustees are looking for specialist advice around their SMSFs, particularly for tax and compliance. Advisors may need to up-skill in specific areas.
  • For advisors, growth opportunities are expected to come from professional referrals, the younger demographic and provision of more specialist advice.

The full report (attached) contains the detailed findings of the research including where SMSFs are investing their money, asset allocation strategies and year-on-year trends in SMSFs.
