Small steps are perfect

Choosing your way to a happier future

"At Russell, we think you deserve to feel good about your super" – Geoff Peck from Russell Investments.

Most of us realise that our happiness has a lot to do with our day-to-day choices. Feeling good in life is a lot like feeling good about your super – it's all about making the right small choices along the way. But how do we make the leap between what we know will make us feel better…and what we actually do? Here are some easy steps to make the most of today – and feel better about tomorrow.

Ease up on yourself (and others).

Life is a series of imperfect facts. And if life's not perfect, there's no reason for you to feel like you need to be. Try to take it easy on yourself and the people around you. Everyone is entitled to make mistakes. After all, that's the way we learn and grow. If you haven't contributed as much to your Super as you feel you should have, don't panic. Just start now.

Respond rather than react.

When something happens, don't react straight away! Breathe, count to ten and think for a moment. From time to time, we all get some disappointing news or face tough situations. If you pause before reacting, you'll avoid saying what you don't mean.

Take small steps.

With everything from getting through the housework to building up your Super, small steps really do work. The old adage that you eat an elephant "one bite at a time" is true. A small contribution to your Super today makes for a happier future.

Do something you love every day.

It's easy to get into a habit of unhappiness. To get into a happiness habit, make a list of small do-able things you enjoy (like having a special chocolate, taking a walk outside, reading a favourite magazine, or even cuddling the cat!). Then make a special time-out to do one thing that makes you happy every day.

Let go.

Forgiveness is an old-fashioned concept, but it's incredibly healthy. Give up old disappointments from your past. Remember that forgiveness is not saying that what happened is right – it's saying that you're ready to let go. Sometimes this is as simple as moving on from a disappointment. During the Global Financial Crisis, many people faced incredible hardship and were hit hard when the economy changed. Recovery can happen but it takes time. Letting go of the past and facing the future with a good attitude can help.
