Russell manages more than US$140.8 billion in assets (as of 'September 30, 2011) in approximately 400 funds (as of December 31, 2009), allowing comprehensive and strategic diversification covering the range of asset classes. As experts on the people who manage money, Russell has more than 40 years of leadership in researching and evaluating money managers. This proprietary knowledge allows Russell to create portfolios of managers, as well as other carefully researched investment solutions, for institutions and individuals. The cumulative knowledge gained from this research is the foundation for all of Russell's products and services.
At Russell, we believe that superior active management adds value. Through a proprietary research process based on objective analysis and in-depth face-to-face interviews, Russell's analysts seek to identify superior investment talent and give our clients access to the world's leading money managers. In 2009 Russell analysts held more than 5,000 research meetings and conference calls with more than 2,600 investment managers in 24 countries. We also believe in continuously monitoring managers; managers selected for our portfolios are replaced or reassigned whenever necessary.

Russell Implementation Services
This group provides a full range of investment services to large pension plans, institutional investors, foundations, endowments and sovereign wealth funds. These services — which include security-level portfolio management, transition management, commission management, cash management, synthetic overlays, currency hedging and agency foreign exchange — are designed to help improve investment performance, minimize costs and manage risks in complex investment assignments.
Russell began implementing portfolio transitions within its multi-manager funds complex in 1980, and in 1992 began offering this service to third-party clients. In 2009, the implementation services team transitioned more than US$581billion. Since 1969, Russell has saved institutional clients over US$1.1 billion in recaptured commission costs. In 2009, the group managed synthetic instruments with a notional value of more than US$65 billion for our clients and funds.
Russell Indexes
Russell's equity indexes family, which includes the industry-leading Russell U.S. and Russell Global Index, allows investors to seamlessly track performance of distinct equity markets, asset classes, sector and industry categories worldwide. Russell's index business began in 1984 as a way to accurately measure U.S. market segments and better track investment manager behavior for its investment management and consulting businesses. The resulting index methodology produced the broad-market Russell 3000® Index and introduced the first accurate small cap benchmark — the Russell 2000® Index. In 2007, Russell applied the same innovative and pioneering methodology to the world's equity markets and introduced a family of global indexes. Today, the Russell Global Index reflects the performance of more than 10,000 stocks in 65 countries.
In 2009, Russell further expanded its market benchmark capabilities by launching a series of strategy indexes, including the Russell-Jadwa Shariah, Dividend Achievers and Factor indexes. These indexes provide a broad range of asset allocation, performance measurement and investment analysis tools designed to meet the needs of investors in the increasingly complex global equity marketplace.
Russell's innovative index design — including float-adjusted market capitalization, annual reconstitution, multifactor style analysis and objective and transparent rules — has led to more assets being benchmarked to Russell's index family than to all other U.S. equity indexes combined. Russell's U.S. indexes currently have US$3.9 trillion in assets benchmarked to them, more than half of the assets benchmarked by U.S. institutional investors. Of the 10 most-used equity benchmarks for institutional assets, 9 come from Russell.
Retirement Services
With 40 years of experience guiding some of the world's largest pools of retirement money, Russell is an experienced and knowledgeable partner well equipped to help plan sponsors navigate the complex world of defined contribution (DC) plans. Russell delivers target date and target risk investment products to the market in two ways: directly to institutional DC plan sponsors, and through financial professionals who advise top-tier retirement plan providers.
Russell also provides comprehensive strategic advice and implementation services to DC plans. Our investment solutions enable plan sponsors to give DC plan participants, such as 401(k) plan participants, unrivaled access to some of the world's leading money managers through Russell's objective, institutional-quality approach.
