Russell began implementing portfolio transitions within its multi-manager funds complex in 1980, and in 1992 began offering this service to third-party clients. In 2006, the investment services team transitioned more than US$480 billion. Since 1969, Russell has saved institutional clients more than US$1 billion in recaptured commission costs.
Russell Indexes
Russell's family of global equity indexes, including the industry-leading U.S. equity indexes, allow investors to seamlessly track performance of distinct market segments worldwide without gaps or overlaps. Russell's index story began in 1984 when the multi-manager investment firm launched its family of 26 U.S. indexes to accurately measure U.S. market segments and hence better track investment manager behavior. The resulting index methodology produced the broad market Russell 3000® Index and subcomponents such as the small-cap Russell 2000® Index.
In 2007, Russell applied the same pioneering methodology to the world's equity markets and introduced a family of global indexes. Similar to how the Russell 3000® captures 98% of the U.S. equity market, the Russell Global Index captures 98% of the global equity market. The Russell Global Index today reflects the performance of more than 10,000 stocks worldwide which includes the Russell 3000® as its U.S. component.
Russell's innovative index design including float-adjusted market capitalization, reconstitution, REIT inclusion, multifactor style analysis and objective and transparent rules has led to more assets benchmarked to Russell's U.S. index
family than all other U.S. equity indexes combined. Russell's U.S. indexes currently have US$3.8 trillion in assets benchmarked to them and account for 52 percent of assets benchmarked by U.S. institutional investors. Russell/Nomura equity indexes for Japan (calculated with Nomura Securities Co., Ltd.) offer broad market or style benchmarks for investors in that country. These pioneering, comprehensive, equity style indexes offer free-float adjustment in the Japanese market.
