Meet our associates

Our greatest investment is the one we make in our people. Here's what life at Russell looks like, through the experiences of three of our associates.
Intellectual curiosity, unparalleled opportunity
For Managing Director, U.S. Equity Brian Tipple, working at Russell is a bit like being in school. "The learning opportunity here is tremendous, and if you have any intellectual curiosity about this business, this is the place to be," he said. "Those of us who have worked in single-manger shops as portfolio managers or stock research analysts know that the focus there is usually very narrow. Working at Russell provides a breadth of exposure to different types of strategies and an opportunity to learn from meeting and working with some of the smartest people in this business every day. We're a knowledge capital company, and we have earned a high standing in that regard through the respect of our clients as well as the managers with whom we interact."
Tipple added that the opportunity to gain invaluable experience early in one's career is an important example of the unparalleled opportunities Russell provides investment professionals. "An associate doesn't need five or 10 years of experience to have a frontline role within Russell," he explained. "We know there is a learning curve in terms of experience, understanding and developing the necessary insights, but in two or three years time an associate can be conducting meetings with some of the smartest money managers in the world. Professional opportunities like these are very rare in our business."
Work-life balance
Portfolio Manager Tereasa Gandhi knows the company's emphasis on work-life balance is more than just corporate legend.
"There's an expectation at Russell to work hard, but also that you need to balance that with your family commitments and your community commitments, and Russell is very good about encouraging associates' involvement in the community and providing opportunities to do so," said Gandhi, who joined Russell in 1987.
"Russell has always been very supportive of me as an individualfrom the professional mentoring I have received, to providing tuition reimbursement for 70 percent of my MBA tuition (Russell now pays 80 percent!)and that certainly makes me want to be here. As an investment professional, this is a place that gives you opportunities to grow and stretch yourself," she explained.
"It's a place where you can take risks and it won't set you back," Gandhi added. "And because Russell is a global growth firm, there are always opportunities to pursue something different or change directions if you're interested in something new."
Investing in our communities
Afsor Miah, who works in our London office, spends three nights each week working with kids on the streets of the east London neighborhood called Crowder & Berner. He also coaches a football team for the Bangladesh Youth Movement and leads a youth discussion group at a place called the Ensign where he talks with his young charges about current affairs. The kids I work with are from all backgrounds & poor areas where crime, drugs and violence are rife. Educational activities distance them from antisocial activities and help them build confidence. I've seen what hanging around a street corner can do to kids who don't have other avenues. If I can stop one kid from turning to drugs or crime, that's enough gratification for me.
