Indexes and benchmarks used in this article are unmanaged and cannot be invested in directly.

AMEX Composite Index: A market capitalization-weighted index of approximately 850 stocks listed on the American Stock Exchange, calculated on price change only and does not include income.

Consumer Price Index: A measure of inflation in the economy, widely used as a cost-of-living benchmark.

Dow Jones Industrial Average: A price-weighted average of 30 actively traded blue chip stocks.

Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) EAFE: An index, with dividends reinvested, representative of the securities markets of twenty developed market countries in Europe, Australasia and the Far East.

MSCI World Ex Canada: An index, with dividends reinvested, representative of the securities markets of developed market countries except for Canada.

MSCI Europe Index: A capitalization-weighted index of the leading stocks in Europe. Membership of the index is selected by MSCI and designed for leading stocks roughly to match market sector weights.

NASDAQ Composite Index: A market capitalization-weighted index of over 5000 stocks. Because it is weighted by market capitalization, large companies such as Microsoft, Intel, WorldCom, Sun Microsystems, Dell Computer and Oracle dominate the index. With such large portions of the index dominated by technology stocks, the NASDAQ Composite is more a barometer for the technology sector than the broader market. New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) Composite: An index that measures the market value of all common stocks listed on that exchange, adjusted to account for capitalization changes, new stocks added to the list, and stocks removed from the list.

RBC DS Canadian Bond Market Index: The Index is a fully disclosed benchmark which includes over 800 securities with maturities of greater than one year and accurately represents the total return on the Canadian bond market.

Russell 1000® Index: Measures the performance of the 1,000 largest companies in the Russell 3000® Index, representative of the US large capitalization securities market.

Russell 1000® Growth Index: Measures the performance of those Russell 1000® Index securities with higher price-to-book ratios and higher forecasted growth values, representative of US securities exhibiting growth characteristics.

Russell 1000® Value Index: Measures the performance of those Russell 1000® Index securities with lower price-to-book ratios and lower forecasted growth values, representative of US securities exhibiting value characteristics.

Russell 2000® Index: Measures the performance of the 2,000 smallest companies in the Russell 3000® Index, representative of the US small capitalization securities market.

Russell 2000® Growth Index: Measures the performance of those Russell 2000® Index securities with higher price-to-book ratios and higher forecasted growth values, representative of US securities exhibiting growth characteristics.

Russell 2000® Value Index: Measures the performance of those Russell 2000® Index securities with lower price-to-book ratios and lower forecasted growth values, representative of US securities exhibiting value characteristics.

Russell 3000® Index: Measures the performance of the 3,000 largest US securities based on total market capitalization.

Russell 3000® Growth Index: Measures the performance of those Russell 3000® Index companies with higher price-to-book ratios and higher forecasted growth values, representative of US securities exhibiting growth characteristics.

Russell 3000® Value Index: Measures the performance of those Russell 3000® Index companies with lower price-to-book ratios and lower forecasted growth values, representative of US securities exhibiting value characteristics.

TSE 300 Index: Measures the performance of the 300 largest stocks on the Toronto Stock Exchange based on total market capitalization.

TSE 300 Capped Index: Measures the performance of the 299 largest stocks on the Toronto Stock Exchange after Nortel based on total market capitalization.
