Sustainability at Russell

As a leading global asset manager, Russell Investments recognizes the importance of environmental, social and corporate governance ("ESG") issues to its clients around the world. ESG issues impact not only our clients' investment portfolios and long-term financial security, but also the business and personal communities in which our clients live and work.

UN Principles for Responsible Investment

In recognition of our commitment to ESG issues, Russell has decided to become a signatory of the UN Principles for Responsible Investment ("UN PRI" or the "Principles"). The Principles are a voluntary set of global best practices that aim to provide a framework for integrating ESG issues into financial analysis, investment decision-making and ownership practices.

With approximately 575 signatories since the formation of the UN PRI in 2005, it is clear that the recognition of these issues in investment processes is of increasing importance around the world. In furtherance of this, Russell formed the Russell Sustainability Council ("RSC") to drive our efforts in the areas of responsible investing and sustainable work practices.

The UN Principles for Responsible Investment are voluntary and aspirational. Where consistent with our fiduciary responsibilities, Russell will aim to pursue each of the six Principles:

  • Incorporating ESG issues into investment analysis and decision-making processes.
  • Being active owners and incorporating ESG issues into our ownership policies and practices.
  • Seeking appropriate disclosure on ESG issues by the entities in which we invest.
  • Promoting acceptance and implementation of the Principles within the investment industry.
  • Working together to enhance our effectiveness in implementing the Principles.
  • Reporting on our activities and progress toward implementing the Principles.

Under the direction of the RSC, Russell intends to support the Principles with a corporate-wide commitment through our five Global Service Lines and other business units. Russell plans to incorporate ESG considerations into our manager research and product development while promoting the UN PRI and other socially responsible initiatives across the investment industry.
