How to invest or trade

Investors and traders can choose from a wide variety of products based on Russell Indexes to help them better manage their investments.

Passively-managed mutual funds and futures and options products are not distributed by Russell, but are available from other institutions. Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are distributed by Russell as well as other institutions. Investors and traders can learn more about investing or trading these products from the financial institutions or the various exchanges that sell them.

Passively-managed mutual funds based on the Russell Indexes

Many of the largest financial institutions in the U.S. offer passively-managed index funds based on the Russell Indexes. These institutions have created over 121 funds designed to closely replicate the performance of different Russell U.S. indexes. These index-based mutual funds are available to both institutional and individual investors, directly from these fund management organizations.

ETFs

Exchange-traded funds, or ETFs, are similar to passively-managed mutual funds in that they are designed to track the performance of an index. Instead of being sold as a mutual fund, ETFs are bought and sold like a stock. ETFs help make passive investments more accessible to all investors.

Futures and options

Futures and options provide investors with instant exposure to the performance of an asset class or group of stocks by making a single trade. Futures and options are often used as risk-hedging tools and can be bought with the expectation that the price for an index will increase or decrease during the time of the contract.

A future is a contract that requires the delivery of a commodity, bond, stock or index at a specific price at a specific date in the future.

An option is a contract for the option to purchase a commodity, bond, stock or index at a specific price at a specific date in the future.
