There's an Easier Way To Make Better Investments

A sophisticated level of investment strategy and manager research allows Russell to deliver a full spectrum of products and services to individual investors, investment advisers and institutional investors worldwide.
Investment Management
Russell's innovative investment approach is available through a select network of financial professionals in New Zealand or directly through Russell to wholesale investors. Russell offers a range of diversified funds and sector specific funds.
Russell created its investment management business in 1980. The concept was to give investment programmes of all types and sizes, access to the same strategies used by large, sophisticated superannuation funds. Specifically, Russell created a series of pooled funds using managers and diversification structures similar to those it was recommending to its consulting clients. The launch of these funds in 1980 represented the introduction of the "manager-of-managers" approach.
Today, more than NZ$163 billion is invested in Russell funds worldwide more than half by institutions. Multiple manager structures are complicated to manage and administer. And they require specialised skills. The success of the Russell funds can be explained by the soundness of the fundamental concept and the approach we take to building and managing these funds. Russell's manager research effort remains by far the largest and most intensive in the industry.
Advisory Consulting
Russell has a long and distinguished tradition of service as a trusted consultant to some of the world's largest superannuation funds. Providing independent advice on all aspects of investment management, today Russell consultants guide the investments of more than NZ$3.5 trillion, serving over 250 clients in more than 30 countries.
The scope of Russell's consulting expertise covers the full range of issues faced by institutional investors, including
| |
- Governance issues
- Objective setting
- Asset allocation
- Asset class strategy
- Portfolio management and implementation
- Management selection/monitoring
- Performance measurement and evaluation

Implemented Consulting
Russell Implemented Consulting combines all the advantages of a balanced manager without compromising investment quality. Medium sized clients can access a level of investment sophistication usually only available to billion dollar funds by delegating the managing of the managers activity to Russell.
With our Implemented Consulting service, Russell provides strategic advice and implementation via a series of carefully designed multi-manager funds. Each of Russell's funds is structured to deliver consistent above-benchmark performance using the Multi-Asset Multi-Style Multi-Manager™ investment approach.
Russell Implemented Consulting provides all the advantages of hiring multiple specialist managers without the burden of manager monitoring, master custody supervision, and the administration complexity.
Single Sector Mandates
Wholesale funds, not wanting to move down the implemented consulting route for their total fund, are able to access Russell Funds on a stand-alone basis.
As international investing gives rise to several risk factors not faced in domestic investing (ie. Country and regional risks), single sector mandates are particularly relevant for this sector. Also many funds still have only one or two international investment specialists managing their fund.
To control exposures to these additional sources of risk the Russell International Shares Fund uses a variety of investment managers (currently eight). These specialist managers are blended into a unique portfolio emphasising both different investment styles and different regions of the world (ie U.S. or Non-U.S.).
Alternative Investments
Russell is committed to helping clients identify promising new investment opportunities of all types, throughout the world. In general, alternative investments provide opportunities for greater potential returns than investments in established markets and asset classes.
Russell focuses on three key types of alternative investments:
| |
- Private Equity
- Real Estate
- Hedge Funds
|
Highly experienced teams of alternative investment experts are responsible for the management of each area. Clients can choose from a variety of investment structures, depending on their objectives and their level of involvement.
To address the risks of alternative investments, we apply the same method Russell has used successfully throughout its history: we research new asset classes thoroughly, including in-depth research on the specialist managers who are well suited to execute a mandate in each area. Our research-based manager of managers process enables us to identify drivers of returns and risk, and it provides clients with an added layer of due diligence of managers.
In addition, our approach is both flexible and scalable. We use a fund of funds approach that provides the potential for enhanced risk control through diversification. If you would like to hear more, contact Russell.
Transition Management
Russell's Transition Management service is a strategic tool for reducing clients' risks and cost when restructuring their portfolios. A well planned and well-executed transition strategy:
| |
- Maintains investment exposure
- Manages portfolio risks
- Minimises overall transaction costs
- Reduces fiduciary risk & administration workload.
|
The goal of Russell's transition management business is to achieve the most efficient risk-adjusted transition for clients and the funds. If you have any questions or want to discuss Transition Management further please contact Russell.
Commission Recapture
In all markets commissions are used to pay for more than just trade execution. They pay for a bundled execution and research. The research can take the form of traditional broker produced research or may be a third party service provided by soft dollar commission. Most managers need access to some research but there is usually room to direct a portion for the funds' benefit. Commission Recapture, is a system that enables a fund to lower costs by unbundling this commission charge and sending back to the fund a commission credit.
A Commission Recapture program can be a powerful cost savings tool for funds; participation levels continue to grow around the world as more people learn of the substantial savings that are readily available.
If you would like to hear more about how to maximise your fund's savings please contact Russell.
