The Russell Investment Approach Multi Asset & Multi Style In general, each Russell fund represents an asset class, and the design of each fund begins with a rigorous assessment of its particular market. The next step is to establish a benchmark and to target an appropriate level of residual risk based on the perceived level of opportunity to generate excess returns. Russell's Investment Management Group incorporates insights from Russell research and its consulting practice as it analyses a number of key variables to determine the basic structure of a Russell Investment Company fund:   Size of the fund Strategies available Risks to control Number and type of managers needed to control those risks Controlling style risk is an important third step. By balancing styles within each asset class, Russell funds are positioned to do well in a variety of market environments and scenarios. But that is just the first step. Often the best investment managers do not fit neatly within traditional style boundaries. We include these highly skilled managers in our funds because we have the ability to analyse and control the significant factors in each asset class. For example, in large-capitalisation equities we analyse more than 100 factors (including price-to-earnings ratio, price-to-book ratio, market capitalisation size, and earnings variability) and control them through our use of multiple advisers with complementary characteristics. So the combined portfolio maintains the optimal style and factor weightings that we have selected, providing the potential for more consistent risk-adjusted returns. Multi-Manager Another important step in the Russell investment approach is selecting the investment management firms we believe can best execute the strategies that we have identified. The Investment Management Group places particular importance on the insights and recommendations of Russell's research analysts, whose detailed, qualitative and quantitative assessment of managers is a crucial and unrivalled resource. Russell maintains a staff of more than 50 highly trained professionals, covering 5,000 products from 1,700 firms worldwide. Our analysts' expertise is specialised in the same way that managers are specialised: by region, by asset class, and by style. The relatively small number of managers recommended by Manager Research is subject to further scrutiny by Russell's portfolio managers in the Investment Management Group. Using sophisticated analytics and extensive first-hand experience, they consider various combinations of buy-ranked managers to create the optimal mix. Our scrutiny of managers analyses characteristics that our research shows are indicative of future success — portfolios, processes, people, and organisational structures. While past performance is not indicative of future results, historically our results have been excellent. We invite you to compare them with the benchmarks, with relevant universes, or with measures you have developed. We subject the managers in our funds to systematic, ongoing scrutiny. Any significant changes are subject to evaluation. If key professionals depart, if we see a single trade outside guidelines, or if the organisation's evolution becomes a cause for concern, we can take action instantly and make the required change.
