(1) An investment company whose shares are traded on a securities exchange, or the over-the-counter market. The number of shares outstanding is limited by the company's charter and their value is determined in the open market.
(2) A publicly traded fund sold on stock exchanges or over the counter that may trade above or below its net asset value.
